Mardi Gras

Krewe of Cork

Founded in 2000, the Krewe of Cork celebrates food, wine and fun with a spirited walking parade through the French Quarter eleven days before Mardi Gras.

Krewe members wear costumes with a wine-related theme, toss throws bearing their grape logo.

The parade's Grand Marshal is a different vintner ever year, and the krewe stops in front of selected hotel restaurants for toasts. After the procession ends, the wine continues to flow at the "King and Queen Libation Ball.”

Green and purple are the main colors found within this design.

My designs based on the Krewe of Cork.  I took inspiration from grapes, green, purple, and the circular shape of grapes and actual corks.  I chose one design to draw on the bigger face using this square method shown on the right.

I then had to trace the design on to my headshot.  I started with no color then added one at a time.

Krewe of Nyx

Founded in 2012, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx is one of the city’s largest all-women's Mardi Gras krewes. It prides itself on embracing women of diverse backgrounds. Their motto is “Friends come and go, but a sister is forever.”
Nyx (pronounced nicks) was the Greek goddess of the night. She was so powerful that not even Zeus dared to upset her. Past Nyx Goddesses have includes Chef Susan Spicer, singer Peggy Lee, the Dixie Cups (“Chapel of Love”), and Irma Thomas, the Soul Queen of New Orleans.  Nyx’s colors are hot pink and black.

My designs based on the Krewe of Nyx.  I took inspiration from night, Zeus, love, stars, pink, and different color combinations. I chose one design to draw on the bigger face using this square method shown on the right.  This made the drawing easier.

Krewe of Oshun
Founded in 1996, the Krewe of Oshun is named for the Yoruba goddess of love and intimacy. Led by the captain aboard a peacock float, the parade includes 20 Barry Barth floats, several bands who participate in a contest, and marching Baby Dolls. Throws include peacock figures and mugs. Oshun’s king is called “Shango.”
Throughout the year, the members of the Krewe of Oshun keeps busy with events for the whole family as well as community service.

My designs are based on the Krewe of Oshun.  I took inspiration from peacocks, feathers, purple, green, strength, gold chains, and sisterhood.   I chose one design to draw on the bigger face using this square method shown on the right.

I also chose this design to actually apply to my face.
Below is the process :)

First, I traced the design onto my face with my lightest eye pencil.

I added the lightest and biggest color on my face, white. It was harder than I thought to get coverage with the makeup.

Then I added green.

I then added purple.

Lastly, I outlined everything with black to make it pop more.  This was hard for me because it took a steady hand.

Overall, I think I did well for my first time applying makeup like this! I'm excited to get to do more looks!

  1. I really like the contrast of the darker makeup colors with the white background on your face
